Add Elegance to Your Bathroom with a Vanity

Enhancing your bathroom by adding a vanity.

Vanities are a great way to enhance the look of your bathroom. They come in different sizes, from compact to huge; designs, from antique to contemporary; colors, from black through white and everything else in between; and materials, including glass and various types of stone and wood.  With all the available vanities for sale, you are almost certain to find any combination of these features. You can, for instance, find a compact antique vanity with a black granite top, or a double sink contemporary vanity with a clear glass countertop and white shelves and drawers. If you just cannot find one that suits your taste and your bathroom, you can always have one custom built for you.

Owing to the virtually unlimited choices, it is often difficult to find the perfect vanity. If you do a serious search, you will probably end up wanting not just one but several units.

You can start making your choice by considering its size. If your bathroom is small, then there really isn’t much choice. If, however, your bathroom is large enough to accommodate bigger models, you have to decide just exactly how big a vanity should you get. There are models that come with two sinks, and this may be just what you need if you and your spouse need to get ready for work at the same time in the mornings.  If you are single and living alone, there is no need for a double vanity but still you have to decide how much storage space you need in the bathroom. This will dictate the vanity’s size.

Whether you want an antique, contemporary, or transitional design depends on your personal taste as well as on the design of the bathroom itself and the over-all architecture of the house. Entering an antique bathroom from your bedroom with modern design and furnishings could make you feel like you are stepping into another world.

Light colored vanities are best for small bathrooms. They can give the illusion of space by reflecting light. Dark shades, on the other hand, look imposing and stately, but they are better left for large bathrooms.

The most popular stones used for vanity tops are marble, granite, and travertine. Glass tops, often incorporating a sink or basin, are also becoming popular. For the stone tops, they either have a sink mounted on a hole drilled for it, or a ceramic basin sitting on their surfaces.

Some vanities have open shelves for storage while others have closed cabinets and drawers. Most of them use wood or a combination of wood and glass. Wood can be kiln-dried solid hardwoods or engineered wood that are protected from moisture with a special coating.

Choose your vanity carefully as it can easily become the centerpiece in your bathroom. A well-chosen vanity does not only add elegance to your bathroom but also fulfill the more functional role of providing your with a storage area for your bathroom needs.
